Tuesday 29th September – Relaxing start, shop(we found one!),sightseeing and hike ***** - sunny periods – Col de Rousset

Woke to blue skies which clouded over by 9 so the other way round to usual!! It was a mixture of sun and cloud for the rest of the day so that was ok :) Had leisurely morning in the field below the van and nearer to the river. Left around 12 and drove down through more awesome terrain and Stephen took a photo of a field of beautiful wild flowers. We even had a sprinkling of villages! That’s a novelty. We stopped at Chatillon en Diois which was a medieval village with beautiful narrow lanes and pretty houses. Carried on to Die which was a lot bigger town and ….. it had a Lidl!! We did our shop which was a must for today as running out of everything. Treated ourselves to prawns for lunch. After missing the turning to a road Stephen wanted to find, we went up the road to the Col du Rousset and where we were going to turn round turned out to be the perfect spot for lunch even had a picnic bench with a view!! Enjoyed our prawns and the amazing scenery then retraced our steps a few miles to find the road which would lead to the other side of the Pas de l’Aiguille where we were the other day but basically it was a rough track dead end so we went back up to the top of the Col. The road is unbelievable with many hairpin bends! We stopped at the top just before the tunnel and had a cuppa looking down on all the hairpin bends and across at the far mountains. We went for a walk to the left of the van but it was just the old road leading to a blocked up ancient tunnel so we went back the other way. We saw a big white camper van reverse into the wooden fence and crack what looked like a brand new bumper! The track up was part of the GR93 walk we were on the other day and the only other people we saw were wearing safety helmets so we assumed they were proper climbers. We carried on up through the trees and were surprised to find what looked like a Roman road cut into the side of the cliff! There was concrete on it but don’t know if that had just been used to reinforce – it looked ancient and it was a weird place to have such a road. It led to a walk in the woods and this is where I lost Stephen for the first time. He went off through the shrubbery on what he thought was the right path and I had to follow him as he had just disappeared! In the end we had to turn back because it came to a dead end. Went up a path I had seen some climbers come down and discovered the need for the safety helmets! They call them paths via Ferrata and basically they are up sheer cliffs with cables and footholds to get you to the top! To start with it was just a normal path and then joined this Ferrata further up. Stephen disappeared into the shrubbery for the second time today and I said I would wait there and he could let me know whether it was a good idea to follow. Despite him shouting down to me and me replying once he just disappeared for quite a while. I then didn’t know whether to move or not but finally I retraced my steps a little and found the proper path (sans shrubbery!) and had to join this Ferrata path and scramble up some rocks (but not sheer) with the help of a cable! There he was miles up the path on the top of a cliff :) I didn’t follow him up as he was coming back down so I sat near the Ferrata sign and waited for him, watching a flock of sheep with a guard dog. We ate emergency wine gums and discussed his weird and wonderful scramble up the wrong path and looked at his war wounds!! We set off back down the cabled path and then the way we came. The Ferrata got pretty hairy after that so we didn’t go there!! Back to the van and a little manoeuvring to make camp for the night on top of the world!! Had a really tasty savoury Galette (pancake) with left over potatoes and bacon for tea :) Had a funny text from Jay saying that Holly had given them a heart attack when they were having a lie in by jumping on them and screaming blue murder!! She hasn’t been upstairs for years!! Little bugger.
